  • Best Practices for Art Preparation
  • Use the best art possible - low resolution and art taken from a web site should be avoided at all times. Use high and low resolution images appropriately.
  • Make sure you are working in the appropriate software for your project.
  • Correct your images before they are imported into the document.
  • Think about your bindery from the beginning. Look out for typography that might get cut off by a die-cut or stitching.
  • CMYK or RGB - convert files to CMYK before releasing.
  • Trust the software, not the screen - color corrections should be made in a calibrated environment.
  • Minimize colors - eliminate unused colors.
  • Build your file to full size.
  • Double-check you designs - make sure your project meets postal standards.
  • Name files clearly.

  • Best Practices for File Releasing
  • Mark all revisions. Update your files or provide a clear print-out of any last minute changes.
  • Use preflight software - the "collect for output" feature helps to alleviate a lot of mistakes.
  • Send your printer a full spec sheet on your job - include color mark-ups.
  • Include hard copy prints or comps with your files.
  • Setup proper bleeds - 1/8" is necessary.
  • Check for linked graphics - make sure you include these with your final files.
  • Eliminate any unused colors or fonts from the file before releasing.
  • Organize files before releasing.
  • Don't set traps - let your printer handle this internally.
  • Include fonts with final files.
